Tessarakonta -- Day 1

1ST DAY, March 5, 2014
            (aka “Ash Wednesday)

Ashes are a symbol of ‘repentance’.  Metaphysically, repentance means a turning away from a belief in error to a belief in Truth or God.  We are dedicating this time of Tessarakonta to discovering something True about ourselves, something Good that we have been unable to see because of the error beliefs we have unconsciously held.

We have an intention to ‘give up’ a behavior which may have grown out of that false belief (because all beliefs cause us to make the choices we make).  By giving up the behavior, we intend to see what the behavior has been covering, and it might not be pretty.  It may have pain attached to it.  It may be something we would find ‘unacceptable’.

However, the good news is that buried under the error belief (and under any pain or ugliness) is only Good.  We are more wonderful than we now currently believe ourselves to be.  The only reason we are able to engage in this spiritual practice at all is because some part of us wants to be free, and to fully experience our inherent Goodness.  And, some part of us is trusting that God’s Graceful Loving Presence is going to help us out.

We can’t fix ourselves.  We haven’t been able to change these beliefs and behaviors on our own.  We need something more; we need a God, Spirit, to help us.

An easy prayer to say, all throughout your day:
“Thy Spirit sets me free:
Thou, only, healest me.”
